Busy Busy

i was just wondering what your dill was… i mean… your webpage. it has not been updated in like… weeks!!! whats up with that? anywho.. i think you should change that. and quick. and make it something special… pour moi!!! :) your favorite little sister. k? thanks!

Okay, okay, it has been weeks. But I wanted to let that “Coming In 2006” sink in a little bit, cuz it’s not gonna be right away.

So keep that in mind, because it’s sure keeping me busy when it seems like I’m being lazy. For now, I dug up this little fragment that I always liked, but haven’t fit into anything yet. Something special? …maybe tomorrow.

“Where’s that Manhattan!?” The yell came from behind me, and would have startled anyone not used to the bustle of a busy restaurant to catastrophically drop whatever they were doing. Fortunately I was used to it, and the bottle of Crown Royal whisky remained in my hand, pouring down into a silver shaker.

The waitress glared at me, her brow deepening into a scowl. Whoever had ordered the Manhattan from her was clearly becoming upset, and it was time to finally make the drink.

Click! The top of the bottle caught the shaker as I pulled the bottle upright.
Slam! I gingerly placed the bottle back on its shelf.
Shlipt! I popped a pint glass on top of the shaker.
Shicka-shicka! I gave the drink a good shake.
Thud! I tapped the shaker on the bar to break the seal.
Splash! I dumped the ice out of the martini glass.
Snap! I snapped on the strainer.
Trickle! The whisky poured in.
Plop! I dropped in a cherry.

I smiled up at the waitress and she rolled her eyes back. She walked away with the drink, mumbled, “thank you,” but I didn’t believe it. I wondered if she realized why her drinks were consistently late. Her tip-outs were so bad, I always moved her tickets to the bottom of the pile.

I moved on to the next ticket: six draught beers. In less than a second I grabbed a pint glass, pulled down the tap lever, and amber ale was flowing along the side, foaming at the bottom of the shimmering glass. The glass caught the light of a bit of flame. Luis was spraying sake onto the grill next to me, working on a yaki ika appetizer.

Yaki ika sounds incredibly more palatable than it’s English name: grilled squid. English has such unappetizing words it seems food is always ordered in another language: calamari instead of squid, linguini instead of flat noodles, venison instead of deer, caviar instead of fish eggs, escargot instead of snails. Other words have second English words to describe them as food: beef, pork, poultry and veal are prime examples. And if you do order in English, it’s usually because of some kind of humourous alliteration like hot dog or fish and chips. Or perhaps some absurd metaphor as in chicken fingers or Buffalo wings.

Alright, New Drink

Crunkacino

1 1/2 oz. Courvoisier
1 oz. amaretto
1 1/2 oz. hot espresso
foamed milk

Combine first three ingredients in a cappuccino mug. Fill with foamed milk. Substitute whiskey for brandy if desired.

Espresso martini
1 1/2 oz. Stoli Vanil
1/2 oz. Bailey’s
1/2 oz. Frangelico
1/2 oz. Godiva
1 oz. hot espresso

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into chilled martini glass.

Holiday Drink Recipies

As a bartender, I come across a lot of weird drinks. These are just a few that I thought were elegant, delicious and intoxicating enough to help ring in the New Year.

French martini

3 oz. vodka
½ oz. Chambord
½ oz. pineapple juice

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass.

Ume-tini*

3 oz. quality vodka
1 oz. Choya plum wine

Shake with ice and strain into cocktail glass, garnish with slice of fresh plum.

Sake dessert*

½ oz. fine sake
½ oz Choya plum wine

Stir with ice and strain into cordail glass.

Trip-C*

1 ½ oz. Courvoisier
splash Cointreau
Champagne

Shake first two ingredients with ice and strain into champagne flute. Fill with champagne.

Black Raspberry martini

2 ½ oz. Stoli Razz
1 oz. blue curacao
splash Chambord
splash cranberry juice

Shake with ice and strain into martini glass.

Patriot Act Blocked

The Senate voted 52-47 to break the filibuster on the renewal of the Patriot Act, shy of the sixty needed. But this isn’t over yet. Majority Leader and general crackpot Dr. Bill Frist (a medical doctor who believes that AIDS can be transmitted through tears and sweat) voted with the Democrats.

This may seem like an unexpected tip of the hat to Democrats, but the reality is that Senate rules allow only “the prevailing side to move for reconsideration of the vote”. (Sec. 18-8) Thus, the majority leader often will change his vote when he expects to lose in order to buy time to drum up more support.

So if you have a Democratic Senator whom will often cave under Republican pressure (Clinton and Schumer, I’m looking at you…) contact them and try to make sure they hold their ground.

Also be aware that two Democrats voted to end the filibuster and let the Republicans have their way: Senator Johnson of South Dakota and Senator Nelson of Nebraska.

But all things considered, I must say that it’s exciting to see the Democrats finally growing some backbone.

Charlie Brown Jazz III

Forty years ago today, television audiences first laid eyes on A Charlie Brown Christmas, the first Peanuts special. Since then it has aired annually every December and had an enduring presence in the culture surrounding the Christmas season. It is widely regarded as not only one of the greatest Christmas specials put to film, but as a testament to the true meaning of Christmas.

Yet network executives were skeptical of the special for four reasons: They did not follow jokes with a laugh track. Children were used to act out the roles, some of them so young they couldn’t yet read the script. There were explicit references to the Bible and the Nativity. And the usual bustling but colorless cartoon soundtracks of the time were absent in favor of a subtle and nuanced jazz track. They were convinced the special would be a total flop.

Of course they were wrong, as network executives frequently are when determining what good entertainment is. The creative choices that worried the executives turned out to be the most effective creative choices made in the production, and we are all fortunate that Schulz, along with his collaborators Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez, fought so diligently for creative control.


The religious themes are profound and I believe that we are all fortunate that at least once every holiday season Linus steps out to center stage to explain the true meaning of Christmas:

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Of course the jazz track referred to by the executives is now a best-selling Christmas album, and several tunes are celebrated as holiday classics and jazz standards.

Of the enormous amount of music composed and reinterpreted throughout his run on the Peanuts specials, only three CDs were released while Guaraldi was alive. A Charlie Brown Christmas in many ways served as a companion to A Boy Named Charlie Brown as the character themes used were virtually identical. The addition of Guaraldi’s arrangements of classic Christmas carols helped make the special more accessible by adding familiar musical themes while also exploring Schulz’s literary themes regarding the true meaning of Christmas.

The centerpiece of the album is Christmas Time is Here, an original Guaraldi tune that is as easily recognized as some of the most enduring Christmas carols. As with Happiness Is on his previous album, Guaraldi doesn’t play happiness and joy, he ruminates on them, just like Charlie Brown.

“Do they still make wooden Christmas trees?” The innocent question sums up the commercialization Charlie Brown saw in Christmas. The scene where Linus and Charlie Brown go off looking for a Christmas Tree is complemented nicely by O Tannanbaum, a very formal playing of the classic for the first 16 measures or so, and then a little jazzier, and a little jazzier, until it’s virtually unrecognizable. Commercializing Christmas just adds a twist here and a twist there until you forget what you’re celebrating.

One track for the special was actually left off the album, a ritzy swing riff that played while Snoopy decorated his doghouse in order to win a decorating contest. It was the perfect music for the situation, and just stood out as an example of jazz that fit, but was not recognizably Christmas music. The track turned up later on the collection Charlie Brown’s Holiday Hits under the title Surfin’ Snoopy.

It was A Charlie Brown Christmas that cemented the style of the artistic collaboration between Guaraldi, Melendez, and Schulz. I’m not sure if there’s such a thing as “jazz animation,” but the distorted figures of the Charlie Brown characters could begin to define such a term. As Charlie Brown found his footing in the animated world, certain things had to be very different from the strip. Backgrounds are used sparingly in the strip as it was originally conceived as a space-saver feature, that each panel could be represented in a space the size of a postage stamp. The show’s script required placing the characters outside of their normal contexts: walking through town, buying a Christmas tree, and up to 10 characters dancing on stage. Given the extra room allowed by television animation the characters were placed on a landscape of distorted perspective, monotone houses, and an absolutely enormous stage.

(Another argument for the Peanuts specials as “jazz animation” is a creative innovation in the use of musical instruments. The voices of adults are the work of a muted trombone.)

One astonishing example of great musical work that was never released onto record is the soundtrack for the Halloween special, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. A wind section was added to the regular trio and flutes were used to great effect on the first version of The Great Pumpkin Waltz and on similar arrangements for Linus and Lucy as well as Charlie Brown’s theme.

The Linus and Lucy arrangement was particularly effective in the opening scene of the special, where Linus and Lucy take a walk to find a Jack O’Lantern. The flutes respond playfully to the hard piano rhythm, flitting around like the fallen leaves Linus kicks on their walk. The flutes were used to just that effect in the very next scene, when their musical responses are to Snoopy blowing a falling leaf into the air again and again, until it lands on top of a large pile of leaves Charlie Brown is raking before it ever touches the ground.

The Great Pumpkin Waltz perfectly captures the naive uncertainty of Linus, chasing the Great Pumpkin in tireless devotion, alone, determined, but ultimately unsure. He stubbornly insists on clinging to a notion his friends assure him is absurd to avoid the embarrassment and shame of admitting once and for all that there is no Great Pumpkin, that the other children’s taunts are justified.

In Peanuts, no desire is ever satisfied. Linus’s fear of being proven wrong becomes over time a delicate dance of clutching youth while a forbidding truth slowly dawns on you, drawing you unwilling and unprepared into a cold world where giant pumpkins do not fly through the air to bring presents to good little boys and girls, no matter how sincere your pumpkin patch is. He is trapped between the three points of the other children, the Great Pumpkin, and his own ego. He writes a letter to the Great Pumpkin and closes it: “P.S. If you really are a fake, don’t tell me. I don’t want to know.”

Finally, Sally abandons him and the shadowy figure in the pumpkin patch turned out to be a World War I Flying Ace, and Linus is left all alone, swearing to his friends that the Great Pumpkin will appear. In the end, he ruins it for himself:

“If the Great Pumpkin comes I’ll be sure to put in a good word for you! Good Grief! I said ‘if‘! I meant when he comes! I’m doomed. One little slip like that can cause the Great Pumpkin to pass you by.”

This is the intense crisis of self that Linus experiences when the Great Pumpkin fails to appear. He must rationalize it somehow before he can face the other children. Lucy still has to drag him, shivering and miserable, back from the pumpkin patch.

The last Peanuts record released while Guaraldi was alive was Oh Good Grief! in 1968. This album added an electric guitar to the band, and consisted of studio sessions of some of the later character themes in the Charlie Brown specials, for characters like Peppermint Patty and Snoopy. There is a version of The Great Pumpkin Waltz, but the use of electric guitar isn’t nearly as effective as their use of woodwinds throughout the special.

In 1998 a sampling of music from the Charlie Brown specials finally saw CD release on the album Charlie Brown’s Holiday Hits. It includes the major musical pieces from the holiday-themed episodes as well as some character themes written later than the existing albums. Some enduring scenes conjured by the music in this collection include Charlie Brown holding an empty Valentine box, Linus throwing chocolates off a small bridge in a jealous fit for Miss Othmar, and Snoopy serving up a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner of popcorn, jelly beans, and toast. It also features Guaraldi’s original version of The Great Pumpkin Waltz.

In 2003, another lost CD of material was released, The Charlie Brown Suite and Other Favorites. The album opens with a big band version of Linus and Lucy, maybe the best version of the song ever recorded. The Charlie Brown Suite itself is a long and ambitious piece that comprises much of the album, incorporating several themes from the strip into a more unified whole.

Apparently studio sessions for the specials themselves are patchwork and hard to come by. But lost Guaraldi material continues to roll out at a slow but steady pace. Most recent release was live footage from a concert Guaraldi recorded with the San Francisco Boy’s Choir which includes a version of Little Drummer Boy and Peppermint Patty. [Both MP3]

I might have covered these later releases in more detail, but unfortunately I don’t have a copy of them yet. Oh, well. Remember Linus when you’re out doing your Christmas shopping this year.

Muslim-Owned Liquor Stores Attacked, Owner Kidnapped

(Updated 11/29) Vandals in suits and bow-ties burned down an Oakland liquor store early Monday morning and kidnapped the Middle Eastern-born owner, who was found in the trunk of a car Monday afternoon. They were apparently the same vandals who smashed cases and displays last Wednesday. Both stores attacked belonged to the Yemini American Grocery Association and were targeted because they were selling alcohol. Said one store owner: “They asked us if we were Muslim. When we said ‘yes,’ one of them said that good Muslims shouldn’t be poisoning the community with alcohol, or something like that.” Police have suggested the vandals have ties to a local community of Black Muslims.

The Nation of Islam is condemning the attacks. Another prominent Black Muslim group in the neighborhood has been unavailable for comment and police have not ruled out that they are under suspicion.

This happened two blocks from my house. I was in the liquor store the other night arguing with the clerk because he thought my New York ID might be fake. Ultimately, they were nice guys. The whole thing is really odd and horrible to me because it seems the local Black Muslims are targeting Muslim immigrants and acting as religious enforcers.

Adventures in Renting

This is a story I wrote for a project that never really went anywhere, but I think it’s pretty funny.

Ten AM. God my head hearts. What’s that pounding? I wish I could just get back to sleep. Stop pounding, sleep it off. What happened last night? Damn my head’s never literally pounded like this before…

Shit, the door. Who the fuck would come to my house at this time in the morning? Anybody who knows me knows to stay the fuck away from my house before noon, really before one or two. Who the fuck is this?

I was bare ass naked. I threw a pair of pants on that didn’t fit, riding down to expose a bush of pubic hair, and stumbled out to get the door, squinting in the morning sunlight.

That’s a fucking cop.
What the fuck’s a cop doing here?
When I opened the door I was looking down at the cop from a step below me. He was staring up at me in that stupid cop way, that he may not know what, but he’s sure I’ve done something wrong.

“Yeah?” I greeted sleepily.
“Is that your car?” The cop pointed. It was my roommate’s.
“No…”
“Do you know who’s car it is?”
“Uh… he lives in the building.”
“Well the registration’s expired.”

You’ve got to be kidding, I thought. Why are you snooping around back here anyway? The car’s parked behind a fence, completely invisible unless you go behind a grocery store, up the dirt driveway to the house, and peek around a fence to see what’s going on. So you’re spying on me?

“Yeah?” was all I really said.
“Yeah, tell him that he has to fix that, or else he has to get a junk permit for it and shouldn’t be driving it.”
“Right.”
“Have a good day.”
“You too…” fucker.

I turned around. There was my roommate and I don’t think I ever saw the man look so confused.

“Was that a fucking cop?”
“Yeah”
“What the fuck did he want?”
“Your registration’s expired.”

I was wrong, my roommate looked even more confused now.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“Nope. Register it or get a junk permit.”

I went back to bed. Head was still pounding, but the noise was gone. I stared up at the paper-patched raccoon hole in my ceiling and thought about the rotting shingles outside.

The man certainly had his priorities.

The police, as a whole, always have their priorities. Rich men constantly break the law, but they will never be arrested by an ordinary cop. But often, if the officer was aware of the law, such violations are blatant. Many buildings inhabiting human beings for money clearly should be drastically renovated or condemned. Restaurants leave the back door of their kitchens wide open flaunting their abysmal state of cleanliness for all the world to see, dumpsters spilling into the alley behind the store. If cops can come poking around for expired registrations, they can come poking around for overflowing dumpsters. But they don’t.

People scoff at the idea, and say that’s not the officer’s job. I beg, what’s the difference? Ethically, why is purse snatching a more pressing matter than poor insulation, locks that don’t work and rodent infestation? “To protect and serve,” they say, but to protect and serve whom? Granted, there are government agencies established to combat the indiscretions of the rich, but at the very least it must be admitted that there is class distinction in the methods of policing. Often suspects can be detained and arrested because they “fit a description.” I’ve got another lawbreaking description for you: fat, white and wealthy. Running a slum should be an arrestable offense, like drinking and driving, shoplifting, and smoking pot.

Once we went through the proper channels and called the Board of Health for an inspection. Boy was the landlord pissed. First time he’d called me in months, ranting and raving about how we should have called him rather than health inspectors. The problem was that I had been calling him, and it didn’t really get results. At some point a pipe had started leaking between the floors, directly over our toilet. Every time I sat down on it, my feet sat in a horrifying puddle on the floor, and my head felt the drip-drip-drip. It smelled terrible. It was health hazardous and just plain unappealing to set foot in my bathroom. Repeated phone calls and this still took two months for the plumbers to come through to fix the problem. The plumbers had to cut a hole in our ceiling and it remained there for several more months, until our call to the Board of Health.

The super got in pretty quickly and started making repairs. I felt bad for the guy, he was overworked in the first place. Not only was he servicing the four apartments in the building, but the two organic grocery stores that our fearless landlord owned as well. One day the landlord showed up with him, and asked to look over the lease. This has to be one of the more frightening powers that one man can have over another, when he inspects the legal arrangement that allows the other to have a home.

“Just a month to month, huh?”
“Yeah…”
“Well, there’s going to be some big changes around here pretty soon, I think.”
“What kind of changes?”
“Changes in occupancy.”
“Are you threatening to evict me?” I’d done my homework. According to the State of Massachusetts, he was not allowed to threaten eviction because we had demanded repairs. The law would be on my side. I may still be homeless, but the law was on my side.

“Well, this building may be coming down pretty soon.”

He laughed, and relaxed a little bit, “I’m sorry. It’s just that this building has been a constant source of headaches for me. Insurance costs, repairs, it seems like something’s constantly going wrong with it. It just seems like it would be easier to tear the whole thing down and be done with it.”

He was laughing, but my apprehension was turning quickly to ferocity while he spoke.

“Look, your headache is my home. Show some respect.” I said it with a calmness and dignity that I probably won’t soon repeat.

And after that, he did.
